My laptop still remains hot even with a additional fan underneath it. Any tips/suggestions? It can sometimes get too hot to type.
I used to give my laptop space to breathe by putting thick books under the left and right edges of my laptop.... Idk how the addition of the fan might work w/that though.
Don't have it on high performance for your power plan. Use power saver mode. I use a desktop fan and set my laptop on books like Millie says so the airflow can get through and out. The flow of a desktop fan seems to do the trick.
I use fan speed-controlling software (both internal MacBook fans set to 5500 rpm) and a Targus Lap Chill Mat. That combination keeps my CPU & GPU around 65-75 Celsius my hands and lap cool while I'm playing Glitch.
@Millie, I don't think I can try that, unfortunately, but will keep that in mind. @usterka Laptop. My sister does have an Acer Netbook, and that does heat up a bit. @Zoe ty for the IM, @ Eye Wonder, I shall try that. @ Aleph, downloaded something for windows...@MoM4.5 I saw that, hopefully I'll the changes I post will help. @ Natsumi will send ^_^. Also, this may... be the very cause: snag.gy/orzHB.jpg (Ty Kali Mocho for the IM as well.)
You can buy one of the little bases with built in fans they sell just for this sort of problem. I find that emptying half a can of dust remover spray into the vents tends to both cool it down right away and remove enough gunk to get the fun working a little better in the long run as well.
Does it have a discrete graphics card from Nvidia or ATI? If so, the card may not be turning off properly when not needed. Those cards put out loads of heat. I have come close to burning my hand by putting it over the exhaust vent on my laptop when my Nvidia card is engaged. I know this can especially happen in Linux distros where the API call too an from the card can get messed up by Bumblebee or Ironhide. It's less common in Windows where discrete graphics are native.
maybe you could re-apply the heat sink goop? that worked for my desktop and the older/bigger laptop. Haven't tried it on my net book though.
Check you have the latest versions of flash and your browser. My macbook was running really hot when playing glitch a few months back, updated everything and its running much better now. Switched from firefox to chrome to play glitch and that seemed to help also.
I use marble under my laptop. I find a marble surface is better than metal for conducting the heat away from the laptop. If you don't have a marble table you can get something like a slab intended for a cheese plate.
That was my problem: had unrelated service call, guy said "I bet you're running hot with all this dust in here." He blew it out, and heat and fan use went down.
