Does it need a machine base piece and an engine - 4 pieces? Can't remember clearly, but I'm guessing if you're trying to build it with just 2 pieces, that that could be the problem.

yes - I think all 4 machines use the engines and bottom base part

    I do have all 4 machines that I built myself, and built myself in the past too, but I once they're built, I don't think about it much... but I do think I had to buy 4 engines and 4 bottom base pieces
